GREECE NORTH-MACEDONIA

A Memorandum of Cooperation was signed by the Waste, Energy and Water Regulatory Authorities of Greece and North Macedonia

The Energy, Water Services and Municipal Waste Management Services Regulatory Commission (ERC) and the Hellenic Regulatory Authority for Energy, Waste and Water (RAAEY) signed a Memorandum of Understanding and cooperation in the areas of energy, water, and waste. Marko Bislimoski, ERC President and his colleague, Assoc. Professor Athanasios Dagoumas, RAAEY President signed the MoU and thus, both regulatory bodies confirmed the cooperation and defined the postulates based on which the functioning of the national and regional energy markets will advance, and the water and waste management services will improve.

“The signing of the MoU, in terms of protocol is a celebratory event, but personally, to us, as an institution, this bears multi-fold importance. We are formalizing the long-standing traditional cooperation while setting the standard in quality solutions and applying a regional approach when it comes to competitive, secure, and sustainable energy market. This will bring benefit for the citizens and industries of both countries. The cycles that our two countries have been through politically are completely different from the experience that we regulators have. Little does the public know that together with the Greek regulatory body (RAAEY) we have built impeccable communication and trust. This is primarily a result of the mentality of the regulators who, especially in times of pandemic and energy crisis, sought solutions to mitigate price shocks. We exchanged experiences in the block tariff model, as well as the transitional solution for reducing VAT in electricity and heating bills. We are happy that this cooperation will also extend to the water and waste regulation sectors. Of course, we are ready to share our knowledge and experience in the area of natural gas and oil derivatives,” said Marko Bislimoski, ERC President.

The Assoc. Professor Athanasios Dagoumas, President of RAAEY said:
«We have an excellent and long-standing collaboration with the Regulatory Authority of North Macedonia. This Memorandum serves as the culmination of our cooperation and will now constitute an official springboard for the exchange of know-how and expertise in three key sectors: energy, municipal waste, and water.
Moreover, the establishment of a stable regulatory framework in these three sectors is our priority. With the signing of this Memorandum, RAAEY highlights its commitment to strengthening regional cooperation in the Balkans—cooperations that will contribute to regional development and the effective management of the issues that concern us as Regulators.»
